What you will find

  • The airspace regions it crosses. Every time the aircraft passes a boundary, the control centre talking to the pilot changes.
  • How many time zones. Computed against the real zone polygons, not from longitude: time is a political decision, not a geographic one.
  • How much of it is over water, and the longest continuous stretch without land in sight.
  • Where it passes: named oceans, seas, mountain ranges, deserts, plateaus and islands, in order.
  • The peaks near the route, with their height.

With the phone in airplane mode: where you are, what you are flying over, how much is left and the weather down there. GPS still works because it is a receiver — it listens to satellites and transmits nothing.

How to install it

  1. Download the .apk file from this same phone.
  2. Android will warn you it does not come from Google Play. That is normal and expected: this app is not in the store yet.
  3. Tap Settings and allow installing from this source. You can turn it back off afterwards.
  4. Open it over wi-fi before travelling, so it can prepare the flight.

What it does not do

  • No accounts, no sign-up. The app does not know who you are and sends nothing to any server. Everything lives on your phone.
  • It is not operational flight information. It is for looking out the window, not for making any aeronautical decision.
  • It does not invent a figure to fill a gap. When something is not known, it says so.
