Between updates each position is estimated from the aircraft's heading and speed. Every 10 seconds the real one is fetched.
Where each figure comes from
- Position, registration and type
- from adsb.lol, a network of people donating ADS-B receivers. Published under the Open Database License.
- What is below the aircraft
- from our own data: 1,338 named geographic regions, built from Natural Earth and GeoNames.
- The airspace
- 1,102 control regions. Boundaries are approximate: they come from the VATSIM dataset, not from the official ICAO chart.
And on board, with no signal
This page needs the internet. The app does not: it carries the same maps, airports and regions inside the phone, and tells you what you are flying over in airplane mode, at 11,000 metres, with no bars.
